The Museo de La Zafra offers the visitor the opportunity to learn about the agricultural history of the municipality of Santa Lucía with a particular focus on the local Tomato Industry. Most of the attractions are contained within two large buildings – the first of which is dedicated to the Tomato. The first few exhibitions go through the introduction of the Tomato to Europe, the creation of various companies involved and the actual production, packaging, transport and export of the crop. Other exhibits demonstrate the traditional agricultural way of life in the surrounding area.
The second building is dedicated to water and the importance of its proper management and its historic use in local agriculture. The exhibits demonstrate the well-developed traditional local water management of irrigation canals, containers, wells, caves and tanks. The museum has an original 85m deep well on-site, complete with well-conserved equipment that is used to demonstrate the workings of the well.
The Ethnographic Complex has a plot of land used grow the various crops that have been cultivated here from the pre-Hispanic era to today (Rye, Sugar Cane, Vines, Prickly Pears, Bananas, etc.). There are also faithful replicas of Chozas (a type of small agricultural building), lodgings and a packing house where the visitor can observe the whole process from the manufacture of boxes and baskets, to the classifying of the tomatoes and the packaging and labelling etc.
