Big-game Fishing
Blue and White Marlin, Spearfish, Dolphin Fish, Wahoo, Blue Fin Tuna, Big Eye Tuna, Swordfish and Bonito are just some of the game fish species that can be caught around Gran Canaria. These migratory fish tend to be in Canarian waters between May and September.
Deep sea fishing excursions (most of which support Tag & Release) are available around the island, however most tourist excursions sail from either Puerto Rico and Puerto de Mogán.

Bottom-fishing for sting ray, blonde, thornback and eagle rays, monkfish, amberjack, moray or conger eel is also offered, especially outside the Big-game season.
Some Boats will not allow you to keep your own catch (they can sell the fish to local restaurants), so it is a good idea to ask beforehand.

Carp Fishing
It may come as a surprise to many Anglers, that Gran Canaria has 63 Lakes and Reservoirs and that many of these have enormous Carp!
The Carp were introduced to control aquatic vegetation in reservoirs, but have become a tourist attraction themselves, with several companies offering Carp Fishing Holidays to Gran Canaria.

Shore Fishing
Float fishing for Mullet and Bream is the most popular type of shore fishing, though it is also possible to spin for Barracuda (which is safe to eat here).

Licenses
A License for Recreational Fishing is required to go fishing in Gran Canaria with limits of number of Rods and total Catch.
Companies that offer Big Game fishing will have the appropriate permits for anyone fishing from their boat, so clients do not have to worry in this regard. Normally the same will apply to companies offering guided Carp Fishing on the lakes.

If you are planning to go shore or lake fishing independently, then you will need to apply for a license from the Gran Canaria Cabildo.

You will need to present your Passport and provide a photocopy of your passport as well as pay a small fee for the License.

Harbours and Private Property
Fishing is not permitted inside any Harbours or Marinas in Spain, that is why there are always large Mullet inside Spanish Harbours!
Many of the Lakes border onto private property and it may be necessary to obtain prior permission form the landowner, if you are not sure it is probably best to go with an organised excursion
