April Showers?
While some parts of mainland Europe receive lots of rain in April, this is not normally true of the Canary Islands. While there are usually a few days with light rain in Las Palmas and at the Airport, the south of the island normally remains dry.
Daily Maximum Temperatures
At Gran Canaria Airport, daytime highs reach an average of 22.6°C in April. Average highs are slightly higher on the south coast, with some days possibly hitting 26 or 27°C. The highest temperature ever recorded at Puerto de Mogan in April is 36.8°C, record on the 26th of the month in 2008.
Nightly Lows
Nighttime lows dip to around 16°C at Gran Canaria Airport (East Coast), about 18°C in the city of Las Palmas and around 17°C in the southern resorts. Away from the coast in the mountains, temperatures will be a few degrees colder. Nighttime lows are fairly consistent at the this time of year, though the record low for Puerto de Mogan (South Coast) in April is 12.8°C (02/04/2015). In terms of clothing, you will still need to pack a fleece/cardigan or light jacket for the evenings.
Rain
Gran Canaria Airport receives an average of 5 days with some rain in April, though Maspalomas will often receive no rain at all during this month. The city of Las Palmas may receive slightly more rain than the Airport, and the northern part of the island’s interior will usually receive substantially more rain. In summary: the south is normally dry, with only single figures (mm) of rain, while the northern slopes may receive 5 – 10 times that amount.
Cloud Cover
The northern and eastern coasts can be very cloudy at this time of year, while the south and south-west tends to be bathed in sunshine. The airport sees some cloud in the sky on 80% of days, while most days are completely clear in the south.
Sea Temperatures
The sea is only starting to warm up from the winter minimums by April. On average, the sea is 19°C around Gran Canaria in April – so still “very refreshing” by most people’s standards. If you plan on any activities such as snorkelling or surfing, then a light wetsuit is advisable. Otherwise, the water might just be warm enough for a quick dip on a sunny day.
