August Weather in Gran Canaria

Daytime High Temperatures

August is the warmest month of the year in Gran Canaria with average daytime maximum temperatures of 27.5°C. Temperatures are warm throughout the island at this time of year: resorts on the South-west such as Puerto Rico or Puerto de Mogan may be a degree or so warmer, and Las Palmas a degree or so cooler. August usually sees some days hitting the low thirties, and the record high for Maspalomas in August is 42.2°C.

Nighttime Temperatures

The average nighttime low at Gran Canaria Airport in August is 21.7°C. The south coast resorts of Maspalomas, Puerto de Mogan etc. will see similar nighttime temperatures, while the city of Las Palmas will be slightly warmer at night. At this time of year, even the mountainous areas don’t see temperatures lower than 18°C. Some evenings will remain in the mid-twenties Celsius, so an air-conditioned room is advisable if you are visiting at this time of year.

Rain

August is one of the driest months of the year in Gran Canaria, and rain is unlikely in any of the southern resort towns. If there is rain, it usually won’t last long or be very heavy. At the Airport, there is an average of 0.7 days with some rain in August, with an average total precipitation of just 0.4mm during the entire month. In the North of the Island, there is usually a little more rain, but even there it is less than 5mm for the entire month on average.


Cloud Cover

As usual during the summer, there is a huge difference between the north and south of the island when it comes to cloud cover. Las Palmas is overcast on most days, while the beach resorts in the south of the island won’t see a single cloud in the sky.

Windy

August is one of the windier months on the island, though these strong winds don’t tend to bother the main tourist resorts from Maspalomas to Puerto de Mogan, which are all sheltered by mountains. On the other hand, the east coast sees an average wind speed of 38.4kmph – making locations such as Pozo Izquierdo perfect for wind and kite surfing at this time of year.

Sea Temperature

The sea continues to heat up during August, typically reaching 22 or 23°C by the end of the month.
