July Weather in Gran Canaria

Hot, but not too Hot

Gran Canaria is mostly spared the extreme high temperatures experienced in Andalucia at this time of year thanks to the prevailing trade winds. While temperatures of 40°C or more are frequent in places like Seville at this time of year, they are uncommon in Gran Canaria. The only exception is when the islands experience a Calima (wind from the Sahara), though fortunately this phenomenon is more common during the winter months.

Daytime High Temperatures

On the south coast of the island, daytime maximum temperatures typically hit about 27°C in July, with some days into the low 30s. Even the coldest day in the south will typically reach at least 24°C. On the north coast and northern slopes, temperatures may be a degree or two colder thanks to cloud cover. Conversely, some inland south-facing mountain valleys may be hotter – hitting 30°C on most days. The hottest temperature ever recorded on the island is 44.2°C – recorded at the airport on the 13th of July 1952.

Temperatures at Night

The average nighttime low temperature at Gran Canaria Airport in July is 20.8°C and it is unlikely to ever drop below 19°C during the entire month (around the coast). Even in the mountains and at altitude it probably won’t drop below 14°C.

These temperatures are perfect for outdoor dining, and you can probably leave your jacket or cardigan at home. There can be some evenings where temperatures stay in the mid-twenties Celsius, so it is advisable to book accommodation with air conditioning at this time of year.

Rain

Rain is extremely unlikely at any of the main tourist resorts during July. At the airport the average number of days with rain is close to zero in July, and the average total precipitation for the month is 0.1mm. In the city of Las Palmas and the northern slopes, there may be a couple of days with some rain, but it is mostly dry everywhere on the island in July.

Cloud Cover

July is one of the sunniest months of the year in Gran Canaria. That said, as always there is a clear difference between the north and south of the island. Southern resort towns, such as Maspalomas, see completely clear skies on approximately 75% of days during July – and probably only one overcast day during the whole month. On the other hand, the city of Las Palmas will see cloud cover on most days in July.

Windy?

July is the windiest month of the year at some parts of island. Gran Canaria Airport (East Coast) experiences an average wind speed of about 42kmph. These constant trade winds make places such as Pozo Izquierdo such hotspots for Wind and Kite Surfers in the summer.

As usual, the southern resorts (Maspalomas, Puerto Rico, Puerto de Mogan etc.) are sheltered from the prevailing wind, and July is often the least windy month with only a slight breeze.

Sea Temperature

The sea around Gran Canaria continues to warm up through July, with an average temperatures of between 21 and 22°C. Areas with shallow water such as around Maspalomas or Playa del Ingles can feel a little warmer.
