October Weather in Gran Canaria

A Great Time of Year to Visit

With summer-like daytime temperatures and warm evenings, October is a great time-of-year to visit Gran Canaria. The south of the island is mostly cloud-free and there is little chance of rain until the end of the month. Many consider this to be the best month to visit the Canary Islands.

Daytime High Temperatures

Gran Canaria Airport sees an average daytime maximum temperature of 26.2°C in October, though temperatures in south coast resorts such as Puerto Rico or Puerto de Mogan are usually about a degree warmer. Even a cool day is likely to reach 24°C, and some days can hit 30°C. Temperatures in the mountains are also very pleasant, with most days hitting the mid-twenties Celsius.

Nighttime Low Temperatures

Around the coast, average nighttime low temperatures remain above 20°C in October, making for very comfortable outdoor dining in the evenings. Las Palmas and other urban areas may be slightly warmer again, so choosing accommodation with air-conditioning may still be advisable.

Cloud Cover

In general, the north-east side of Gran Canaria is much cloudier than the south-west, and this trend continues in October. The city of Las Palmas usually sees some cloud on most days during the month, while the southern resorts such as Maspalomas enjoy completely clear skies on about 75% of days.

Rain

The south coast resorts remain mostly dry in October – receiving, on average, less than 5mm of rain during the whole month. The Airport sees an average of about 4 days with some rain during the month, the city of Las Palmas will see a little more than that, and the northern-facing slopes of the mountains generally see considerably more rain again (with some areas seeing over 50mm on average).

Wind

The prevailing North-easterly trade winds lose their grip on the islands in October, and the wind tends to drop considerably. While the prevailing winds don’t generally adversely affect the sheltered southern resort towns anyway, they are even more diminished at this time of year with many still days.

Sea Temperatures

Sea temperatures remain close to their peak for the year at about 23 or 24°C – perfect for cooling off after spending time basking on a sunny beach.
